“Something More,” ink, 10” x 10”, 2011.
Album art for one of The All-About’s monthly EPs, later re-used for the single version of “Nothing But Your Confidant” (now available on Bandcamp). The track was originally on this same EP, and the composition for the cover was initially inspired by the song’s chorus: “I am nothing but your confidant/ But I’d like to be something more.” I tried to figure out how to present the idea of being “something more” visually, and so I retooled the first image I came up with - simply a girl whispering to a friend - into a panel from a non-existent superhero comic. It was important to me that the male’s expression and posture be just wistful enough to show that, despite being a superhero, he’s still completely insignificant and neurotic, and yet not come off too dopey or pathetic.
The idea of a Woody Allen-like Superman has been a fascination of mine for awhile now and I keep trying to write comics about it, but I can never seem to quite get it to work… Probably because superhero comics make me uncomfortable and I keep trying to purge my drafts of all super and heroic elements.
